Emergency Preparedness for Caregivers: Be Ready When Crisis Strikes

Emergencies are stressful for anyone, but for families caring for elderly or disabled loved ones, inadequate preparation can be life-threatening. Whether it is a hurricane, power outage, winter storm, or sudden medical crisis, having a plan in place before disaster strikes can mean the difference between a safe outcome and a dangerous one. Build an emergency kit that includes at least a seven-day supply of all medications, copies of prescriptions, a current medication list with dosages and schedules, copies of insurance cards and identification, a list of all doctors with phone numbers, medical equipment supplies such as batteries for hearing aids or extra oxygen tubing, non-perishable food that meets dietary restrictions, water, flashlights, and a battery-powered phone charger.

Create an evacuation plan that accounts for mobility limitations. Identify two exit routes from the home and practice them. Know which local shelters accommodate individuals with medical needs or disabilities. Register with your local emergency management office's special needs registry so first responders know someone requiring assistance lives at your address. Keep a portable file with all critical documents including advance directives and power of attorney papers.
